October 26, 2012
California Space Grant Utilizes HPWREN LIVE Concept to Share Interactive Physics Lesson with Remote Audience The California Space Grant Team recently led a distance learning activity between the Los Angeles County Fair and physics students at Mountain Empire High School, which is located in rural southeast San Diego County. Using lessons learned from the HPWREN LIVE team, the California Space Grant distance learning activity allowed the rural high school students to explore the physics involved with carnival rides - without leaving their classroom. |

September 10, 2012 HPWREN and California Research Learning Center Publish LIVE Findings in Park Science Journal Article HPWREN staff worked with National Park Service (NPS) employees to conduct a distance learning study at the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and publish the findings in an article in Park Science, which is a journal published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, the NPS, Natural Resource Stewardship and Science, Office of Education and Outreach. A San Diego elementary school classroom was connected to the lighthouse via Skype; students in the class were able to interact in real-time with one of their classmates and an interpretation ranger - both portraying living history characters of the lighthouse era. |

July 29, 2012 California Wolf Center Collaborates with HPWREN for LIVE Activity for Little Feathers Pre-K Classroom Earlier this year, HPWREN staff worked with the California Wolf Center to prepare and present a Live Interactive Virtual Exploration activity to a group of youth at the Little Feathers Pre-K, which is located on the Pala Native American Reservation in rural San Diego County. Using Skype, the youth interacted in real-time (video and audio) with a Wolf Center biologist, who was strolling a wolf enclosure at the California Wolf Center. |

May 16, 2012 Pala Native American Learning Center Participates in HPWREN LIVE Activity Focused on Tidepool Vegetation and Animal Life National Park Service Ranger Rick Jenkins and HPWREN LIVE staff Kimberly Mann Bruch shared southern California coastal vegetation and animal life with Pala Native American Learning Center students in mid-May - using LIVE technology to take the students on a virtual trip to the Point Loma tidepools. The students were able to "touch and feel" several species of seastars, urchins, and clams while talking with Ranger Rick about specific characteristics of these interesting sea creatures. |

April 18, 2012 Guadalupe Mountains LIVE Activity Peaks Interest in Animal Science Among Native American Students On April 18, in conjunction with a LIVE Training Workshop, National Park Service interpreters took a group of Pala Native American Learning Center students on a virtual tour of the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, which is located in west Texas. The students learned about Guadalupe vegetation and animal life with a particular focus on the kangaroo rat, which is also found in San Diego county. |

December 9, 2011 10th Annual HPWREN Users Workshop Includes LIVE Overview Chantel Jimenez, Environmental Education Specialist at the USFWS's San Diego NWR Complex, hosted the 10th Annual HPWREN Users Workshop on December 9, 2011 at their Sweetwater Marsh location. Following the welcome and introduction, Chantel Jimenez presented an overview of the USFWS mission and local activities. This was followed by an HPWREN recharge presentation and discussion led by Ron Hawkins, following which Hans-Werner Braun gave an overview of the HPWREN status and the current QoS implementation. Additionally, Kimberly Mann Bruch presented an update on LIVE activities. |

November 15, 2011 Third Graders Explore the Old Point Loma Lighthouse via HPWREN LIVE On November 15, 2011, the HPWREN LIVE team worked with National Park Service interpreter Emily Floyd and eight-year-old NPS volunteer Elizabeth Bruch on a pilot LIVE activity between 17 third graders at Del Mar Hills Elementary School and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse at Cabrillo National Monument. |

November 3, 2011 Sea to Shining Sea LIVE Distance Education Technology Transfer Workshop, San Diego The workshop hosted by San Diego State University Field Stations Program, the High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN) and Cabrillo National Monument over the course of three sunny days. Participants learned to assemble and use the low-cost LIVE backpack system to broadcast distance education programs to classrooms and audiences across the country. In addition, National Park service staff, teachers, and school administrators learned to design a basic wireless system which supports LIVE distance education programs and real-time environmental sensors at their sites. This year's LIVE workshop included instruction and tips on how to draft a PMIS project statement to seek grant funds for implementation of LIVE programs at each NPS site. |

July 31, 2011 National Leadership Council of the National Park Service Visits San Diego via HPWREN On a sunny February morning, from the bluffs above the Pacific Ocean, Tom Workman, Superintendent at Cabrillo National Monument, welcomes members of the National Park Service (NPS) National Leadership Council (NLC) to San Diego. Susan Teel, Director of the Southern California Research Learning Center, led the NLC members on a whirlwind Live Interactive Virtual Explorations (LIVE) tour of the park, which included a quick dunk underwater in the tide pools to search for sea critters. |

February 28, 2011 IGI Global Online Symposium: Southern California Tidepools LIVE On Monday, February 28th, IGI Global and Elluminate hosted an online symposium featuring Kimberly Mann Bruch from the High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN) at the University of California, San Diego. The hour-long presentation took place from the Point Loma tide pools during a low tide. This gave Ms. Bruch the opportunity to discuss with us the technology that she and HPWREN have developed such as extended battery power to run the laptop computer, as well as portable video equipment that is submergible. The flora and fauna of the tide pool area was also discussed as we saw snails, sea anemones, and birds. The attendees included a fourth grade class from Wyoming, college students, professors, and other educators from all over the world. |

October 25, 2010 Live Interactive Virtual Explorations (LIVE) Activities are Showcased at Department of Interior Diversity Days Federal employees and members of the public experienced an array of National Parks via Live Interactive Virtual Explorations (LIVE) at the Department of Interior (DOI) Diversity Days event in Washington, DC on October 13-14. The LIVE activities allowed audiences at the DOI Main Interior Building (MIB) to experience hard-to-reach culturally-diverse sites throughout the country and interact with National Park Service rangers without leaving the city of Washington, DC. |

The Learning Center provides an array of resources for the Pala Native American reservation community. |

April 14, 2010 HPWREN led an installation to expand the wireless network at Cabrillo National Monument Wireless radios and an access point at the lighthouse keeper's quarters will enable staff to conduct LIVE living history programs from the lighthouse, assistant keeper's quarters, and surrounding grounds. The goal of the installation was to mount the access point and radio, with minimal impact to the building and its aesthetics. |

February 10, 2009Synopsis of Recent LIVE Demonstrations at Science and Education Sites Throughout the United States In an effort to identify sites which have limited or non-existent Internet connectivity and which have unique or rare resources to share with students via Live Interactive Virtual Explorations (LIVE) distance education programs, Sea to Shining Sea (StSS) staff have met with National Park Service staff at various parks to provide an overview of the StSS project and introduce them to the equipment needed to support distance education in remote and hard to reach field locations. Kimberly Mann Bruch and Susan Teel have focused on describing how low cost equipment may be used as a research and educational tool, and emphasized its value to increase public interest. HPWREN assisted with the set-up of temporary wireless bubbles near office locations and where possible demonstrations of the LIVE backpack system from each site. |

Event participants ranged from scientists and educators to K-12 students and general community members in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area. March 31, 2003California State Parks Distance Interpretation Program Collaborates with HPWREN for Remote Interactive Presentations Last week, teachers from around the country paid a "remote" visit to the Anza-Borrego State Park. The teachers, who were attending the National Teacher Training Institute Conference in Irvine, participated in an underwater tour of Crystal Cove State Park and examined fossilized oyster beds in nearby Fish Creek - while sitting in a conference room in Irvine about 100 miles away. |
January 4, 2002HPWREN Collaborates with Palomar College and SCTCA's Tribal Digital Village: Computer Science Class Includes Multicast Technology Experiments Last semester, the HPWREN team worked with Palomar College and the Southern California Tribal Chairmen's Association (SCTCA) Tribal Digital Village Network to offer a Computer Science and Information Systems course for local Native American reservations. The course was primarily taught in traditional classroom style at the Pala Learning Center for Pala, La Jolla, Rincon, and San Pasqual tribal members. |

 The LIVE Science Explorer Passport is a concept that is currently being developed. The Passport allows students to document their experiences via HPWREN LIVE so that they can review them in the future. We are working with collaborators such as the Pala Learning Center, the California Science Center, the National Park Service, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the California Wolf Center, the Palomar Observatory, the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve, and the San Diego Supercomputer Center to develop a set of curricula to accompany LIVE activities.
