What Is GIS?
Geographic Information System (GIS) is a collection of computer hardware, software, geographic data and personnel designed to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze and display all forms of geographically referenced information.
GIS Services
The Department of GeoSpatial Information (GSI) provides a variety of services to 17 divisions of the tribal government. GSI currently offers training in GPS, Electronic Field Survey (EFS), Introduction to GIS and the GSI ArcServer website. Paper and digital maps, as well as spatial analysis results are provided by request.
GSI Personnel
GSI currently has 13 positions: director, GIS manager, GIS analyst, GIS specialist, web developer, systems administrator, two technicians, administrative assistant, and four part-time interns. The Chickasaw Nation GSI personnel comes from a variety of backgrounds, ranging from degrees in Cartography, Geography to MIS and Engineering. The diversity of our team further enable us to meet the various GIS analysis needs of the Chickasaw Nation.

Emergency Management Services
EMS Mapping
Nowhere is the effect of technology more evident than in the field of law enforcement. Lighthorse Police officers now have the ability to access GSI data via computers in their patrol units. Available data includes information such as street layers, aerial imagery, tribally owned lands, trust status and facilities. This information is important to LPD because land ownership and trust status often play a role in tribal jurisdiction.Economic Development
Successful economic development activities enable the Tribe to provide services to Chickasaw citizens. Realizing that one critical variable to the success of a business is its location, the Division of Commerce is careful to select business sites based on a series of criteria. For example, one economic venture required a tribal land held in trust, of more than 10 acres, having no existing facilities, and with proximity to Interstate 35 of less than 1 mile. By querying the GSI database, this process took a matter of minutes, rather than days, to accomplish.Additionally, GSI provides detailed maps for environmental assessments and site inventories. These maps include land attributes, acreage codes and land codes, as well as facility locations, names and division.
Culture Preservation
The Chickasaw Nation has a rich history that involves two regional homelands. The first of these homelands was centered near Tupelo, Mississippi (prior to Indian removal in the 1830’s), and the second was centered in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. In order to preserve the history of the Chickasaw Nation, GSI is geo-referencing the original 1830’s survey of removal from the homelands of Mississippi. Historically significant sites in Oklahoma are also being mapped and stored in the GSI database.
The Future
GSI recently launched a series of ArcServer intranet sites and plans to go online with an internet site in the coming months. The external site will allow individuals to locate Chickasaw Nation facilities (e.g. health clinics, senior sites and head-start programs).
