Historic Johnston County Residence Hosts Free, Family Event
The Chickasaw Nation White House is hosting an old-fashioned kite flying event this weekend, April 5-6.
The family-oriented event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 5-6, at the White House, 6379 E. Mansion Road, Milburn, Okla.
This old-fashioned event is free and open to the public, said Regina Berna, director of tribal museums and historic sites. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
"Bring your own kite and join in the fun, or use one of the kites provided by the staff," she said.
When Chickasaw Governor Douglas H. Johnston lived in the White House in the early 1900s, kite flying was a favorite pastime, and the Johnston family spent many hours creating and flying their own kites on the White House lawn.
The restored historic home will also be open for tours, upon request.
Directions to the Chickasaw White House:
From downtown Tishomingo go east on S.H. 78 through Milburn, approximately three miles, watch for cemetery sign on east side of highway, turn right (west) at the cemetery sign, (Mansion Road), for approximately a half-mile. The White House is setting on the right (north) side of the road.
