Tribal After School Program provides fun, education for kids

After School program student Taylor Porter makes a turkey out of fresh fruit one afternoon last month during the six-week program. A total of 25 students attended the program.

Creating the likeness of a turkey from a variety of fresh fruit was the mission one afternoon during the Chickasaw Nation After School program, which was conducted Nov. 2- December 11, 2009.

Students, ages seven to 13, have opportunities during the six-week program to participate in a variety of activities and learn new skills which promote wellness and good nutrition A different activity is planned for each day of the week, including swimming, fitness, martial arts, lessons on culture, nutrition, and trips to Lazer Zone.

Returning student Jayson Morgan said he looks forward to the Friday trips to the Chickasaw Nation-owned family fun center, Lazer Zone.

As he was arranging oranges, apples, pears, apricots and other fruits to make a turkey, he said he has also learned about new fruits and snacks during the nutrition sessions.

“I didn’t know there were that many fruits,” he said.

Jayson attends the fifth grade at Willard Grade Center in Ada.

Kelly Jesse, participated in the After School program for the first time and said she enjoyed the trips to Lazer Zone the most.

She also learned about nutritious snacks

“I didn’t know apricots are good for you,” she said.

Kelly attends Homer School and mentioned she has made new friends through the program.

Taylor Porter, a Washington Grade Center fourth grader attended the After School program last fall and was looking forward to participating again this year.

She enjoys swimming days and meeting her friends.

“My friend Dawson and Hailey and her brothers are here,” she said.

She learned Chickasaw numbers for the first time through the program.

The After School program will be offered in the spring. The hours are 3:30 -5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Admittance is based on first come-first serve basis for Chickasaw citizens and Chickasaw Nation employee’s children.
