Chickasaw Artist Larsen to Host Presentation on "Arrival" Sculpture
Take a trip back in time this weekend at the Chickasaw Cultural Center’s Memorial Day Celebration, Saturday and Sunday, May 25-26.
A traditional “living village” will be the highlight of the celebration. Living history performers will re-enact Chickasaw life in the 1750s and offer interactive activities for the whole family including; basket making, hide tanning, archery, traditional children’s games, craft and pottery demonstrations and a stickball game. A gardening lesson and Chickasaw language demonstration are also planned.
Chickasaw artist Mike Larsen will host a film and presentation documenting the creation of the “Arrival” sculpture at 1 p.m. in the Anoli' Theater.
Overlooking a bluff on the cultural center campus, the “Arrival” is a breathtaking bronze sculpture depicting four generations of a Chickasaw family forced to leave their ancestral home and travel hundreds of miles to an unknown place. Standing more than nine feet tall and weighing 3,000 pounds, this sculpture shares the story of the Chickasaw arrival in present-day Oklahoma. Larson created details of the sculpture from both research and his study of living Chickasaws, who served as models for the work.
