ADA - The Chickasaw Nation department of Libraries, Archives and Collections will be hosting the 2008 Children's Summer Library Program July 14-17 at the Chickasaw Library in Ada, Okla.
The program is free and open to the public.
"We are hoping to provide a fun program for children to raise their cultural awareness," said Jessica Conley, Chickasaw Library assistant.
"It will be a great opportunity to get area kids in the library."
Each day from 10 a.m. to noon, students will have the opportunity to experience hands-on learning in different areas of Chickasaw culture.
On Monday, the 14th, tribal ethnobotanist Steven Bond will introduce the children to traditional plants of the Chickasaw people. Tuesday, Elizabeth Brewer, Chickasaw Nation Health System customer relations coordinator, will conduct a finger weaving demonstration. Michael Cornelius, Chickasaw Nation Cultural Resources, will lead the students in a flute making class on Wednesday. On the fourth and final day, students will make their own shell shakers and attend a demonstration by the Chickasaw Nation Dance Troupe.
