Recognition of HPWREN at the 2018 CENIC Annual Conference

In recognition of work to bring advanced IT and telecommunications to the fight to contain California wildfires, the WIFIRE, HPWREN, and AlertTahoe projects were selected as recipients of the CENIC 2018 Innovations in Networking Award for Experimental Applications.
Project leaders recognized included Ilkay Altintas, San Diego Supercomputer Center; John Graham, Qualcomm Institute, University of California San Diego; Graham Kent, Nevada Seismological Laboratory, University of Nevada, Reno; and Frank Vernon, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego (UCSD).

The CENIC Annual Conference 2018, held on Mar 5, 2018 – Mar 7, 2018 at Monterey, California, not only recognized these HPWREN and related activities, but also spotlighted their leaders and their activities over the course of three days of presentations. These included:
- Collaborative Data Science in a Highly Networked World, Keynote by Ilkay Altintas
- WIFIRE's Firemap: Making Realtime Fire data Available During the Northern California Fires, panel with Louis Fox, Ilkay Altintas, Jessica Block and John Graham
- Wireless Extensions of R&E Networks, a panel with speakers Frank Vernon, Jeff Weekley, Ilkay Altintas, Graham Kent and Matt Rantanen (Director, Tribal Digital Village Network)
- The Big Pixel Initiative: Utilizing Satellite Data for Remote Sensing (PRP/NRP track), a panel with speakers Ilkay Altintas, Jessica Bock (Staff Research Associate, UCSD), and Gordon Hanson (Director, Center on Global Transformation)
